BreathaLyzers do not measure BAC – which is done exclusively by a blood sample. BreathaLyzers attempt to measure alcohol in the breath and estimate the amount of alcohol in blood. Keep this DUI fact in mind when you’re blowing into the machine.
DUI FACTS #3
A common false DUI fact is that you can somehow interrupt a BreathaLyzer’s results. Sucking on a penny in an attempt to dupe a Breathalyzer machine DOES NOT WORK!
DUI FACTS #4
A lesser known DUI fact is that you are never required to perform Field Sobriety Tests. Law enforcement will often not disclose this and will suggest that you perform them. Field Sobriety Tests are used to “pad” the arresting officer’s report and substantiate his suspicion that you were drinking and driving.

Not all BreathaLyzer tests are what they seem. For instance, people who have Hypoglycemia will register a BreathaLyzer from the natural acetone in their mouth. Law enforcement can alter a Breathalyzer’s effectiveness. The arresting officer will often ask you to breathe harder into the machine. This is so that the air from your lungs is coming from the bottom of your lungs where the alveolar sacs are found and the air is richer in alcohol content.
